In January 2013, Vanessa was had a near-death experience.  She was diagnosed with a rare heart disorder, Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, which has the same symptoms as congestive heart failure.  Her heart muscle had weakened, causing which in-turn weakened her heart valve, causing her blood to bleed outward in steed of flowing inward.  She was told by the cardiologist that if the bleeding was not stopped, she would be dead by morning.  Since that day, Vanessa became an advocate for Women’s Heart Health.  She had the opportunity to tell her story on a local television with other women who were all survivors of heart disease and hopes to be partnering with the American Heart Association, Red Dress for Women Campaign, using one of her pageants as a donation source.

In 2013, Vanessa became a state Ambassador for Ms. Integrity Beauty Women of Excellence, a Christian ministry that uses the pageant concept with members using their life experiences to encourage and strengthen other women.  Because of her struggles and drive for survival and dedication to the organization, Vanessa was selected as a National Ambassador and given the title of Ms. Integrity Beauty Woman of Strength 2014-2015.  She also served as the Director of Recruitment.
